It was a wonderfully sunny day. For Heidi’s afternoon walk, I had decided to head down to the marina.

The sun shone so intensely the water appeared unnaturally blue, nearly indigo. The gulls and Brandt Geese were restless. (and the photo was entirely straight out of the camera, absolutely No touch up)

Even before I got out of the vehicle, I could hear the constant din of the sea lions. It’s that time of year. There are hundreds of them. Residents and tourists alike flock like the seagulls and geese to see the spectacle.

this is the ‘small’ group; there are more around the corner

Did I mention how full the marina parking lot was? People, many of whom never come down here though it’s right in town, looking like lost souls not quite sure where to park or where to walk to find the source of the constant barking. Smiling I show a few confused souls which direction to walk. A cool spring breeze bounced across the water cooling my cheeks.

around the corner, they stretch out a long way — this is one small section of the sea lions

Being quite familiar with the marina I chose to leave the throng and jetty behind, so Heidi and I took the plank down to the docks.

The air, sheltered by rows of boats and the high sides of the jetty, was calmer and lost its chill. Even the surface of the water flattened out, showing off reflections.

I even came across three darling otters as they were grooming one another. Because I had Heidi with me, I chose to stay a good distance from them so they wouldn’t become frightened. I watched them for a while but without a proper zoom lens also didn’t take a photo of the trio. It would have been one of those photos where someone says, “If you look closely, those three lumps at the end of the dock are sea otters.”

Heidi and I spent two and a half hours there, wandering all the docks and the jetty, me taking photos, stopping to visit with a couple of the sailors, and winding up the afternoon with a stop at the fish market for some locally caught fish for Sunday’s dinner. Neither of us was anxious to head back to the car to head home.

It was an afternoon of deeply saturated colours, gentle sea breezes, the sun resting on our shoulders, and experiences to remember long into the coming spring and summer.

How simple a thing is happiness and contentment: a sunny walk along the sea, the spring gathering of sea lions, a loyal dog, a glass of wine, a meal from the sea. Nothing more.

  1. Gosh the water looks amazing in your images! The water on the east coast always looks so grey and cold in comparison (New Brunswick and Nova Scotia at any rate. The ocean around PEI can look a little friendlier). I love your final tally of the days activities. It does sound like the perfect day!

  2. I should love to live near a port, to see the bustle of boats in and out and wildlife in plenty.

  3. I love this series with beautiful reflections, colors and Light. I particulary love your Australian shepherd, I love this dog and this one is superb

  4. The reflections are beautiful, and what a sight all those sea lions are. It sounds like you and your pup had a wonderfully peaceful day!

  5. It looks like it was a beautiful day to be outside, Diane.
I just love the sea lions. How fortunate you were to be able to photograph them.
Thank you for taking us along with you, and have a wonderful week, my friend!
    xo.

  6. i feel like i took a brief version of the walk with you through your words

as always, you’ve posted a wonderful array of exceptional photos

i notice the details of the boats show better in the reflections than they do against the sky. most likely because they are isolated in the water, but in the sky, they are competing with other boats.

since i nearly always choose a favorite, i’ll do so. as i scrolled down, i kept thinking i’d found my favorite, only to see the next one replace it. however, after looking back through them several times, i especially like the first greyscale image that is only reflections. to me, that would be perfect as a work of art to hang in a home. after finishing our recently purchased home that had to have a major remodel and using grey paint on the walls, i had to rethink several of my favorite pictures i had previously hung in my home. grey is a difficult color to use in a home and with so many people using grey right now, i think you should try to market that photo to be printed and sold in someplace like Home Goods or the like.
