A tear came to my eye and then, like in a spring rain, tears rolled down the curves of my cheeks. Hearing “You are my Sunshine” on the radio while looking out to a beautiful sunny morning and enjoying my morning coffee, the memories it evoked on this Mother’s Day brought the tears along with them.

On this lovely Mothers’ Day I’m remembering how my dear mom used to enjoy singing songs like “Cue sera sera,” “You are my Sunshine,” or Jim Reeve’s “Scarlet Ribbons.” How I’d love to hear her voice again.

I miss her so much.

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away.”

Cue Sera Sera, lyrics by Jay Livingston / Jean-christophe Le Saout / Galt Macdermot / Raymond B Evans

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother what will I be
Will I be pretty will I be rich
Here’s what she said to me
Que sera sera
Whatever will be will be
The future’s not ours to see
Que sera sera
What will be will be
When I grew up and fell in love
I asked my sweetheart what lies ahead
Will we have rainbows day after day
Here’s what my sweetheart said
Que sera sera
Whatever will be will be
The future’s not ours to see
Que sera sera
What will be will be
Now I have children of my own
They ask their mother what will I be
Will I be handsome will I be rich
I tell them tenderly
Que sera sera
Whatever will be will be
The future’s not ours to see
Que sera sera
What will be will be
Que sera sera

If you are fortunate to have your dear mother still here, I hope you’ll phone her and enjoy a lovely chat and don’t forget to let her know what you love about her. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there.

  1. So beautiful. I sang You are My Sunshine to my kiddos, and my mom loved Doris Day and her rendition of Que Sera Sera. I just belted that one out by myself here today. Thank you for that. Now I am off to search out that Jim Reeves song. xo M
