Do you keep a book on your breakfast table and read it in the morning (instead of picking up your cell phone and looking at the news?)

So often, especially on social media, people keep saying how they find it difficult waking to such awful news each day. Well, simply don’t. Wake up, yes. But there really is no reason for any of us to read the news in our first hour or two in the morning. To me, the solution is simple.

And if you don’t eat breakfast, simply do something else. Play with your dog or, better yet, take the dog for a bit of a walk around the neighbourhood. You have kids? Then play with them, read to them, or go for a walk with them and explore all the living things you encounter (plants, trees, birds, …). Don’t have kids or a dog? So, listen to some music, meditate, write in a journal, do a crossword, draw or paint, write a letter, or try enjoying some silence for a while. None of this has to be hours long because a mere half hour will provide us with a much more balanced and refreshing start to our day.

And don’t worry, by delaying this tendency for picking up the cell phone first thing in the morning, you won’t miss any news. It will be there waiting for you. The upside is that you will be in a much more resilient frame of mind.

If you’re wondering what books have spent time on my breakfast table, scroll to the bottom of my site and you’ll see the most recent selections there in my Goodreads selection.

So tell me, what is on your breakfast table? In other words, how do you spend your first hour or two each morning?

In the spirit of sharing and since so many people are home-cooking during the pandemic, here is one of my favourite (and quick) dishes: Prawn & Scallion Pancake. We eat it for lunch or dinner and I’ve also served it as an appetizer. Enjoy!

“Life is what happens when your cell phone is charging.” — unknown (but very wise person)

“Technology can be our best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party pooper of our lives. It interrupts our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine something wonderful, because we’re too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back to the office on the cell phone.” — Steven Spielberg

  1. when i was young, breakfast was my favorite meal of the day and i could have eaten breakfast food three times a day. i don’t know why, but i quit eating breakfast sometime in the last decade.

i drink my coffee and read my Bible; currently in the book of Jeremiah. amazing how relevant it is to what’s going on in our world today.

the cup of coffee with my reading of God’s Word fortifies me better than any meal ever could

(your crossword pic reminds me of my mother. she could work any crossword and did)
