You know that feeling when you’ve been reading a really, really engaging book — the kind that you never want to finish and that feels so darn good in your hands? I just finished one of those kinds of books and now I’m so reluctant to open another. Wondering what novel it was that I enjoyed so much? My Goodreads page has my first thoughts after pulling my bookmark and closing the final page.
“Books are good company, in sad times and happy times, for books are people—people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book.”

Today is one of those days I feel like sharing a bunch of things I’ve been up to so be prepared for another potpourri of sorts.
Oh it’s the best thing: sitting in my office, window open, & the amazing fragrance of a sweetly scented lily drifting through. My newly planted lilies are filling the air with the most intoxicating fragrances.
It’s continued to be downright chilly here, not the usual summer weather. We’re still turning on the heat in the house every day; I’m still wearing mostly winter clothes (sweaters, pants, and wool socks). Yet on the other side of Canada they’re experiencing extreme heat. On the bright side, I made some dinner buns and shared them with the neighbours since they keep bringing us strawberries and raspberries from their backyard.
We went chair shopping to buy a chair that’s much more comfortable — and practical — for me, especially with all the hip problems I’m having. Furniture stores are definitely not back to normal in terms of numbers of shoppers so we didn’t have to wear a mask.
I’m getting a bit more piano practice in. But not just plunking along taking it easy. I’ve realized I need to push myself much more and focus on the difficult stuff. You know, kick it up a few notches!
Ah, you don’t want to read all this boring stuff. Here’s a little something interesting I thought I’d share with you:
- I want to do this. I really do.
- This common-sense and delightful advice seems like it came from the Betty Crocker era, though it’s really quite practical for our times. Quarantine: 15 obscure essential items.
- I bet you can’t help but say, “Wow” when you look at these photos taken in Viet Nam. And, if you’d like to see what else he photographs, he’s also on Instagram.
- I was captivated at her experience and how she wrote about them. The swallows fall from the sky.
Wishing you a week ahead enjoying fresh local (or homegrown) food, delightful times in nature, and perhaps a lovely surprise. And as, our wise medical health officer keeps sharing with us: “Be kind, be calm, be safe.”
we are sweltering in the heat and humidity. it has taken my thriving, English garden down to the greenery that had to be cut back and barely any blooms survive. my hope is to water every day and keep it alive until the coolness of autumn stops suffocating it.
it’s good to read of your cooler, fresher air and see the warm baked goods that no doubt fill your home with heat and odors that evoke wonderful memories.
