A novel I recently finished certainly has challenged my thoughts and feelings about addiction. When a novel can make a person reconsider how they view a certain aspect of life, I’d consider that author triumphant in her quest.

Before I Let You Go by Kelly Rimmer

I loved this novel and found myself emotionally invested in these characters. This is one of those novels that has me thinking about them even after the last page is turned and the book closed.

If it’s not evident in the publisher’s synopsis, this is a story about addiction, the deep bond of two sisters, and family secrets. Although I became frustrated at times with Annie or Lexie’s decisions or actions, I was gradually able to realize and understand their reasons or motivation.

I will openly admit that, like many others, I thought of addiction not so much in terms of the individual and the individual’s story but as a label. Reading this novel certainly challenged me to reconsider how I thought about addicts and addiction.

Although this wasn’t one of my book club readings, I will certainly be putting it forward next term for their consideration — Ideally suited for discussion.

Have you read a book that challenged your thoughts on a topic? Or, that has changed how you think about something?
