I never lose the sense of excitement that comes over me when I receive real life prints from my photographs. Whether they’re printed in a photo book or magazine or I’ve had them reproduced on canvas, fine art paper, or even simple 4×6 prints — it’s a genuine thrill.

I’m sure the feeling is similar to anyone who creates whether it’s a sculptor finishing a complicated piece; a woodworker finishing an item of furniture; a knitter completing a sweater for someone; or a gardener seeing the results of their labour mid-summer.

Not too long ago I had a nice series of floral images printed on 6×6 fine art paper. When they arrived, I couldn’t have been more proud of how they turned out. There are different types of fine art paper but the first ones I had reproduced on a simple smooth matte, which has a nice rich look and feel. I placed a large order about a week ago for a few larger sizes, with some printed on a different type of fine art paper. Most of these current ones are landscapes, but I also included an abstract and a couple of seals.

Today, those I ordered last week arrived and boy-oh-boy. With some of them, it makes me almost want to ask, “Did I really take those?” I can actually imagine a few of them blown up really large. I spread a few of them out on my desk, stood back and admired them.

I know I say this so often but, the emotions I’m feeling from these photographs is something I know many of you can experience. What about those photos you’ve taken of your family? Your children? Your grandchildren? Silly moments, sad moments, surprising moments. If you select merely a handful of your favourites and send them off to be printed — simply some 4×6’s — I know exactly the feelings you too will experience when you open them up and hold them in your hands. Go ahead, do it. Do it for you. Do it for them.

The photographs that will one day mean the most to you will never win an award or get comments and likes; it will be those that bring to memory the people and the moments that make your life rich and full.

  1. Oh! oh! oh! You are making me want to finally do this. And start with something doable, smaller-sized. Like maybe choose photos from the first three months of my son’s birth. You see, we didn’t even get a wedding album made, my husband and I, and it’s been 10 years now, and I realize, that having the phots in my hands, as an album. . . I miss that solid, physical experience.

I think your post is a nudge for me to start this project I have been thinking about for so long.

Your excitement is contagious! your pictures are absolutely gorgeous. I would actually love to have that one with stones stacked atop each other on my walls. And the one next to it which is all ripples. I would be honored to pay for it as a token of my appreciation, if you ever want to sell some of these. (or maybe you already do? in which case I would love to know where I could look that up!)

thank you so much for sharing this beauty with us!

  2. A beautiful series of photos that you should be proud of. I love the collage of family photos where everyone shares a sense of elation. When taking photographs, I admit I must be more cognizant about composition and even turning the simplest floral photo into an eye-catching abstract. After this year (as I prepare for retirement, fixing up the house, selling the house, and moving), I need to look into these photo projects again. My best creation that I was most happy with was when I was making Adirondack chairs for friends and family back in 2010. It was something that I had control of from start to finish, not having to rely on someone or something else to finish it for me. And yes, there is a photo of it. 🙂

  3. Oh my goodness….forgive me…your work is absolutely stunning! Well done! Thank you for sharing!

  4. We need to chat. I need some help with printing and photo books. I want to start with a photo book for each of your wee neighbours across the street. I literally have thousands of photos of them from their first few years.
