Some days work isn’t the first thing you want to rush out and do. As Will Rogers is quoted as saying, “Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.” So, instead of work sometimes I choose play.
Recently I had completed a photography project on marinas and even used some of the images from that project for a ‘zine challenge (by Dan Milnor and Marc Silber). Well, it seems I can’t stay away from marinas. The allure is too strong.
Although I am currently working on a long term project plus another very personal one, I was feeling like I needed something purely for fun. So I went back to a beginner’s trick and chose to do a 30-day list project. Basically, it’s a general list of 30 items/prompts prescribing what to photograph each day. I’m having great fun with it, probably because it is so elementary. So what does it have to do with marinas?
The other day, the specific challenge was “from a low angle/perspective.” I’ve done many of those and was thinking of something from that angle, I haven’t yet done. Well, the marina came to mind so off I went. I had great fun, even if a few people wondered what on earth I was doing lying on the pier holding my camera down by the water!
Anyway, by the time I left, which was a much longer stay than anticipated, I was in the best of moods and jaunted happily back home. Perhaps my marina project isn’t yet over. Perhaps I need to consider something a bit more in-depth or simply to put together a larger print project reflecting my time at marinas. I’ll see how that goes.
This 30-day project certainly is proving to be refreshing in its simplicity as well as where it takes me.
It’s important to take bad pictures. It’s the bad ones that have to do with what you’ve never done before. They can make you recognize something you hadn’t seen in a way that will make you recognize it when you see it again.

Heidi is so pretty. She looks so dainty and ladylike in this capture.
Gotta love the reflections in all the marina shots
An interesting series of photos captured at the marina from these low points of view! What could have been seen as mundane by the average passerby you turned into eye-catching photos!
I love your 30 Day Photo Challenge. It’s a great way to get past the ‘perfect trap’ and just have some fun. I had an online friend who invited me to a 52 week challenge of sketching. She randomly chose 52 words from the dictionary for us to use. It was a great exercise that taught me a lot without any pressure.
